5 - Getting The Most Out Of Leisure

By Barry LaValley
I find a number of retirees simply fill in time with mind-numbing activities. That's a personal choice, but it may not go a long way towards longevity. Similarly, other retirees focus on doing one particular activity every day or embarking on one cruise after another. Again, your choice entirely but wouldn't you get more out of retirement if you tried the balanced approach to leisure?

There are six kinds of leisure that most retirees undertake:

  • Social interaction
  • Creative expression
  • Physical activity
  • Solitary contemplation
  • Spectator appreciation
  • Intellectual engagement

Ideally, you want to balance your leisure between these six and try to vary your activities. This doesn't mean that you can't golf every day; simply that golf becomes part of your leisure balance and that you may even enjoy it more if you don't treat it like a job.
