Work doesn’t have to be negative and it also doesn’t have to be forty hours a week for a paycheck. In retirement, work is anything you do that uses your time, energy and experience in a positive manner. By that definition, volunteering your time could still be considered work.
In retirement, work also becomes a welcome break from prolonged leisure. The key is to think about what you like to do in your present work and then find ways to replicate it. It might mean starting a new business, working part-time or maybe not leaving the workplace at all. Studies suggest that business owners who retire are more than twice as likely to return to the workforce within two years as retired employees. That’s why the clarification exercise is so important, particularly for business owners. It is great that you can sell your business, but after that, what is your plan?
